In a symbolic plot, Marianna, a teenage girl raped multiple times by soldiers, decides to give birth to a rape child, perhaps in response to the appeal of the Pope. The Church “nominates” her for sainthood. Recounting the story of Marianna and her relationship with the institution of the Church, “loosely” portraying the characters of the drama, we attempt to present our own reflections on the primeval human loneliness and the intimacy of suffering. The play includes texts by Gustaw Herling-Grudziński, Franz Kafka, Jaan Kross, Saint Paul and members of the ensemble. The name of the theatre, niebopiekło [heavenhell], in no coincidence. It ventures into the same regions as the work of Grudziński, who examined the territory between good and evil. Taking a cue from his writings, we probe the osmosis of light and darkness. Ensemble PERFORMERS: Ewa Stołowska, Andrzej Stróż LIGHTING: Andrzej Szomszor Length: 50’ Premiered on 13 June 2007 Ewa Stołowska was born in 1982. She has degrees in cultural and English studies. She has been a member of niebopiekło since 2005, and she is an instructor at the Theatre and Dance Studio at the Municipal Arts Centre in Bydgoszcz. She is a camera operator and self-taught editor, making documentaries, music videos and film studies. She has also worked as a reporter, translator and proof-reader. Ewa is a member of the Kultura Foundation in Toruń and the Wrocław-based Buddhist association Przebudzeni. Andrzej Stróż was born in 1955. He is a chemist, and he works as waste management specialist in the Department of Environmental Protection in ZACHEM S.A. He is self-taught theatre professional. He has been artistic director of the OFF PREZENTACJE TEATRALNE in Bydgoszcz from 1991–2000. He was a member of the now-defunct Trzeci Teatr w Drodze. He founded niebopiekło and created the INNE SYTUACJE International Theatre Festival. |
