Theatre Cinema

Theatre Cinema is a cycle of presentations of documentary films and archive materials on Jerzy Grotowski, the Laboratory Theatre and other significant phenomena in the field of theatre and cultural research. These presentations often complement lectures or meetings, and are preceded by experts’ introductions. Participation in these events is free. The first presentations in the Theatre Cinema took place in 1991, following the transformation of the exhibition room of the former Documentation Centre of the Laboratory Theatre into a projection room. Since 1993 the presentations have become cyclical. Bruno Chojak, responsible for the programme, has organised presentations dedicated to figures such as Witold Gombrowicz and Tadeusz Rozewicz, as well as presentations of Polish film and television shorts. Some of these cycles were designed to prepare audiences for the visits of eminent figures or companies organised by the Grotowski Centre, such as Eugenio Barba or Peter Brook. The tradition of Theatre Cinema has also included all-day showings of film material dedicated to the life and work of Tadeusz Kantor, held on the anniversary of the artist’s death on the 8th of December. After a change of management, which took place in 2004, the responsibility for the programme of Theatre Cinema was taken over by the Programme Director, Dr. Grzegorz Ziolkowski, who tied its repertoire to the current activity of the Centre. Since then, numerous cycles dedicated to significant theatre phenomena have been shown, always with great care for the uniqueness of the presented materials, which is often acquired and translated specially for the purpose of these meetings. The first cycle constituted a survey of documentaries with which Jerzy Grotowski had illustrated his lectures at the Collège de France in Paris (1997–1998). |
