Talk by Prof. Grzegorz Niziolek

14 January
(Fri)
12th Anniversary of Grotowski’s death

5 pm
Laboratory Theatre Room, 27 Rynek-Ratusz

Prof. Grzegorz Niziołek (Jagiellonian University) will give a lecture entitled Grotowski wobec Zagłady. Poza dialektyką apoteozy i ośmieszenia.

Two of Grotowski’s productions included direct references to the Holocaust, Acropolis (1962) and The Hamlet Study (1964). Peter Brook recalled Acropolis as something extremely disgusting, repulsive and breathtaking. Eugenio Barba compared The Hamlet Study to a fetid wound and described his impression as pain mixed with disgust. The borderline experiences connected with these productions enabled Grotowski to undertake a serious rethink of the principles of his theatre, formulate the message of poorness and embark on a quest for luminosity, state of grace and human nakedness.
