In a series of poetic vignettes filled with symbols and allegories drawn from Armenian tradition and culture, the film tells the story of an 18th-century Armenian poet, Sayat Nova. Despite changes made by Soviet censors, the film is rightly regarded as one of Parajanov’s greatest works. 31 March (Thu), 6 pm The Legend of Suram Fortress Directed by Sergei Parajanov, David Abashidze Year of production: 1985 Running time: 88 min. This film is in memory of the Georgian warriors of all times who had died for their country. It is based on an old Georgian legend. To defend their country from the onslaught of foreign conquerors, people started building a fortress, but each time the wall had reached the roof level, it crumbled. “The wall will hold if a handsome young man is immured in it”, predicted a fortune-teller.
