Masters in Residence

Masters In Residence is a practical extension of the Institute’s initiatives which, after the Grotowski Year 2009, have become one of the major programmes related to the work of European Theatre Masters. The programme is informed by the practice common in European theatrical culture, of offering residencies to foreign artists.

The uniqueness of Masters in Residence lies in the involvement of illustrious artists such as Peter Brook, Eugenio Barba and Odin Teatret, Theodoros Terzopoulos, Anatoly Vassiliev and Diamanda Galás, who are provided an environment to work independently, resulting in work demonstrations, theatre premieres and music performances at the Grotowski Institute.  The programme creates the artistic challenge of reintroducing theatre practice into a space that has earned a permanent place in the history of theatre.

In the second year of the programme (launched in 2010) work proceed simultaneously on three productions, one of which – The Chronic Life (by Eugenio Barba and Odin Theatret) have had its polish premiere in October 2011. The programme also included acting workshops and directing work demonstrations. This area of the Institute’s activities aims to steadily strengthen the position of the Institute and of Wroc³aw on the cultural map of Europe as an important centre of cultural tradition and education, and to project across Europe the image of the Institute and Wroc³aw as an arena of extraordinary, highest-calibre artistic and cultural events.
