The expression 'Regula contra Regulam' can be understood in two ways. The first is paradoxical: '[A] Rule against [The] Rule', that is, a rule that is given in order to fight rules.
The second represents an opposing perspective: 'One Rule against Another'.
Regula contra Regulam evokes the relationship between training and actor’s dramaturgy, between discipline and creativity, between the need of rules and the need to break them.

This is the IX session of the project Regula contra Regulam in the forest base of Brzezinka.
This pedagogic and artistic project focuses on preparation work for actors and directors, in technical and creative field.
Each field has its own rules. Some of them are obvious, some others are hidden and must be personally discovered. A moment comes when they come into conflict with each other, and there we must take our artistic decisions.

Students must meet special and favourable occasions in order to face creative problems of theatre craft. On the other hand, it is also necessary to face a net of restrictions and limits. This is a vital paradox and therefore, a creative one.
When we learn a way to move within this paradox, our attention becomes supple and we can understand which rules must be followed in each specific moment and which ones must be betrayed. It is a true professional endeavour that requires practice in spite of theories.

The session focuses on three fields of practice:

1. Training, that is, preparation before the stage. Knowledge and creation of the individual bios of the stage, the development of an organic and efficient physical  and vocal language. For directors, the work consists in the process of meeting the creative bios of the actors he will work with.

2. The creation of Stage Materials (with body, voice, music, objects) and the phases of Relation and Montage, with individual and collective work. First, only actors will work, then they will meet directors.

3. Living together in the house of Brzezinka, taking care of the spaces and of everybody who is taking part in the work.

Creative work in this session focuses on LIFE IS A DREAM by Pedro Calderón de la Barca.
