SCREENING: Spanish premiere of the film Grotowski← Flaszen
Written and directed by Małgorzata Dziewulska, National Audiovisual Institute, Poland 2010, 55’
Introduced by Prof. Beata Baczyńska

GROTOWSKI←FLASZEN is a cinematic journey in the footsteps of Jerzy Grotowski, a great reformer of twentieth-century theatre. Ludwik Flaszen, co-founder of the Laboratory Theatre, takes viewers on a guided tour of Grotowski’s Wrocław. Flaszen’s tale of his friendship with Grotowski, their shared passions and explorations is intercut with footage of performances, television programmes, documentaries, and previously unpublished photographs. The phenomenon of the Laboratory is presented in its historical context. “The film belongs to the genre of documentary essay”, says Małgorzata Dziewulska, essayist and theatre director, for whom GROTOWSKI← FLASZEN is a directorial debut. “It contains a minimum of historical background and is rather a reflection on the power of Grotowski’s ideas and their relevance today. I wanted to touch a great mystery without passing judgement or offering glib answers.”

The film was produced by the National Audiovisual Institute.
