In March we will present a programme of films focusing on the work of Sasha Waltz, Europe’s leading female dancer and choreographer. Most of Sasha Waltz’s productions have been made into films by the directorial duo of Brigitte Kramer and Jörg Jeshel, who will be the guests of the Grotowski Institute in April. In April, Theatre Cinema will present a programme of their films.

noBody   Germany, 2002; 90’; directed by Jörg Jeshel and Brigitte Kramer; choreography by Sasha Waltz; music by Hans Peter Kuhn; produced by Schaubühne am Lehninger Platz Berlin in co-production with Festival d’Avignon

In Körper Sasha Waltz investigates the anatomy and the physical appearance of the human being, explores the function and all possible uses of the human body, asks about its cultural role, price and how it can be modified, exploited and destroyed. She wonders whether the body is just a ‘container’ or rather an instrument to convey our feelings and emotions. S presents the human body as an erotic object consumed with passion. noBody asks about metaphysical existence, bodiless life, the attitude toward death, a desire for immortality, and whether it is possible to represent the immortal. Staged in Berlin’s Schaubühne theatre, the Körper, S and noBody trilogy cemented Sasha Waltz’s position as one of the most prominent artists in contemporary dance theatre.
