This three-day workshop will focus on the connection between oral tradition, Corsican polyphonic singing and early Catholic repertoire known from written sources. We will practise ornamentation and improvisation as well as work on vocal production and the effect of a mix of voices.
Our repertoire will include traditional Corsican songs as well as medieval and Baroque plain chants (based on 17th-century Corsican Franciscan manuscripts).

Jean-Etienne Langianni is a self-taught singer from North Corsica. He first joined Tavagna, an ensemble that was part of the 1980s movement for the revitalisation of Corsican heritage. With them he performed popular traditional songs and his own compositions such as E muntagne d'Orezza. Langianni is a long-term member of Organum, a unique ensemble directed by Marcel Pérès, with whom he recorded twelve pieces that are among the oldest forms of sacred Occidental chanting. Their versions are marked by vibrant interpretation, richly coloured timbre and rich melismatic modal ornamentation. He has recently formed Seraphica, an ensemble treating ancient music as if it were popular singing, incorporating a modern harmonic and compositional vocabulary.

The workshop will be semi-open. Participants will include members of the In Medias Res project, members of Teatr ZAR, guests from Schola Gregoriana Silesiensis and participants selected through an application process. Participants of the first voicEncounters – The Phenomenon of Latin Confraternities, which took place in Wroc³aw in November 2010, are very welcome to apply.

If you wish to attend the workshop, please complete the application form and return it via e-mail by 25 May 2012 to marta@grotowski-institute.art.pl. We will get back to you by 30 May 2012.
Fee: 200 PLN.

The workshop is organized as part of the “In Medias Res” project, initiated by Jean-François Favreau
