Alleyway Cinema: Dance Theatre

Alleyway will present film excerpts of performances by such dance theatre masters as Pina Bausch, Sasha Waltz, Wim Vandekeybus and Lloyd Newson.
Most of the films have already been shown as part of Theatre Cinema in the 2010/2011 and 2011/2012 seasons. All of them are available for watching at the Reading Room of the Grotowski Institute.

 Ultima Vez  60’ 
Excerpts from the following performances: Blush (2005), In Spite of Wishing and Wanting (2002), Silver ( 2001), Body, Body on the Wall... (1997), La Mentira (1992), Roseland (1990)

Ultima Vez was founded in 1986 as the company and organization of choreographer, director and filmmaker Wim Vandekeybus. Since its foundation, Ultima Vez has intensively developed its activities as an international contemporary dance company with a strong base in Brussels and Flanders.

 DV8 Physical Theatre  60' 
Excerpts from the following performances: The Cost of Living (2004), Enter Achilles (1996)

DV8 Physical Theatre was formed in 1986 and has been led since its inception by Lloyd Newson. The company has produced 17 highly acclaimed dance pieces, which have toured internationally, and four award-winning films for television.

 Pina Bausch  60’ 
Excerpts from the following performances: Café Müller (1987), The Rite of Spring (2010), Orpheus and Eurydice (2008), Kontakthof with Ladies and Gentleman over 65 (2002), Dancing Dreams (2010), Bluebeard: While Listening to a Taped Recording of Bela Bartok´s “Duke Bluebeard´s Castle” (1987)

Pina Bausch (1940–2009) was a German dancer and choreographer. She began dancing at 15, first in Germany at Folkwangschule under Kurt Jooss, and then at Juilliard School, New York. In the 1973/1974 season she became artistic director of the Wuppertal Opera and Ballet, which she renamed Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch.

 Sasha Waltz  60’

Sasha Alexandra Waltz (born 1963) is a German choreographer, dancer and leader of the dance company Sasha Waltz and Guests. Together with Jochen Sandig, they founded the Sophiensaele in central Berlin as a center for the development of free theatre and dance. In 1999 she took over as Artistic Director at Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz in Berlin. Once her 5-year period with the Schaubühne finished she reactivitated Sasha Waltz & Guests as an independent company again, with a base in Berlin. It was established as an international project with 25 permanent and 40 associate collaborators.


All screenings will take place simultaneously outdoors and in CaféThea.
