Theodoros Terzopoulos was born in the village of Makrygialos. He attended K. Michailidis’ Drama School (1965–1967) in Athens and trained at the Berliner Ensemble, where worked as an assistant director (1972–1976). He was Director of the Drama School of the State Theatre of Northern Greece (1981–1983) and Artistic Director of the International Meeting on Ancient Greek Drama in Delphi (1985–1988), to which he invited many leading figures in international theatre including Heiner Müller, Tadashi Suzuki, Min Tanaka, Anatoly Vassiliev, Robert Wilson, Andrzej Wajda. In 1985 he founded Attis Theatre.
Since 1990 Theodoros Terzopoulos has been a founding member of the International Institute of Mediterranean Theatre, comprising twenty two countries, and since 1991 he has been President of the International Institute of Mediterranean Theatre in Greece, organizing a series of events (“Violence and Peace in Mediterranean Theatre” International Festival, Patra, 1991; Theatre Education Days, Mytilini; conferences, etc). Since 1993 he has been Chairman of the International Committee of Theatre Olympics. In addition, he was Artistic Director of the 1st Theatre Olympics, “Crossing Millennia” (Delphi, 1995), and served as Chairman of the 2nd Theatre Olympics, “Creating Hope” (Shizuoka, Japan, 1999), the 3rd Theatre Olympics, “Theatre for the People” (Moscow, 2001), the 4th Theatre Olympics, “Beyond Borders” (Istanbul, 2006) and the 5th Theatre Olympics, “Sarang (Love and Humanity)” (Seoul, 2010). In 2005 he resurrected the International Meeting on Ancient Greek Drama in the Municipality of Sykion. The next two edition of the event were held in 2006 and 2011.
Theodoros Terzopoulos has directed tragedies by Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides, as well as contemporary plays by leading European playwrights such as Brecht, Lorca, Müller and Beckett, and by Greek authors. He has directed at many international theatres including Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza and Moscow’s Taganka Theatre. He has participated in numerous international festivals and worked with prominent actors from all over the world. Terzopoulos and Attis Theatre have toured extensively in Greece and abroad. Over the past twenty seven years, Attis Theatre gave 1900 performances all over the world. Its most famous productions include Bacchae (1986, 2001), Medea Material (1988, 1995, 1996, 2002), Quartet (1989, 1993), Persians (1990, 2003, 2006), The Liberation of Prometheus (1991), Phaedra (1991), Antigone (1994), Prometheus Bound (1995, 2008, 2010), Heracles (1997), Philoktetes (2003), Ajax the Madness (2004), Oedipus Rex (2006), Kassandra (2007), Mademoiselle Julie (2008), Mauser (2009), Alarm (2010), Antigone (2011).
Theodoros Terzopoulos’ work method is taught at drama schools and classical studies departments of thirty international universities. The director has won many Greek and international theatre awards. Many books about his work method and theatre approach have been published or translated in countries such as Germany, England, Greece, Turkey, Russia and China.
