Plunged in grief after Aeneas’ departure, Dido cries out “Remember Me!” before committing suicide. What would have happened if Aeneas, who had chosen to sacrifice his private desires to public duty, had spoken the same words during the journey that was to separate him from his lover forever?
Remember Me originates from the masculine and feminine elements that appear, come together and mix, to finally disappear. The body is fragmented – its parts do not add up to a stable, coherent whole. A hermaphrodite emerges, a creature that predated Adam and Eve, and the myth becomes the key to unlocking the present.
Through its form, the performance asks fundamental questions about its meaning. What are the performers doing behind the screens, under the lights? Is what I’m seeing real?
The actors’ bodies inhabit the same space as those of the spectators. They are mirages, never recorded, revealing themselves in the here and now – the essential and touching privilege of theatre.
And all the while, a voice can be heard singing a rock version of Henry Purcell’s opera Dido and Aeneas.
