The end of Act Two. The stepdaughter and father should “feel” the story that is unfolding not by their own will but by the will of some other being. They should enter the door that fate is taking them to. One must go, to an encounter, by instinct. It usually happens on impulse, but should be near- conscious. A character consciously wants to be another character. This is the mechanism of transubstantiation: intention, insistence, repetition of the same shade, encounter. That encounter with mystery contains the moment of transubstantiation. The act of action reveals to us the meaning of the act of transformation. I say the act of action, because action alone is only a direction (Anatoly Vassiliev).
