This panel discussion explores the impact of the official Turkish denial of the Armenian Genocide on the lives of individuals in Turkey. The distinguished panel includes academics and human rights activists who campaign for minority rights in Turkey.

Ayºe Günaysu is Executive Commitee member of Human Rights Assocation, Turkey, Istanbul Office. Co-founder and member of the Association’s Committee Against Racism and Discrimination. Columnist of daily Ozgur Gundem, the newspaper of the Kurdish opposition movement, closed down several times and re-started under new names.  Also a columnist of Armenian Weekly published in Boston, USA.

Talin Suciyan is originally from Istanbul and, after living in Yerevan for over a year, she moved to Germany where she is a teaching fellow and PhD candidate at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, Institute of Near and Middle Eastern Studies. She teaches Western Armenian and late Ottoman and Turkish history. She worked as journalist over 10 years for various Armenian, Turkish and foreign media.

Ragıp Zarakolu, born 1948, is a Turkish human rights activist and publisher who has long faced legal harassment for publishing books on controversial subjects in Turkey, especially on minority and human rights in Turkey. Currently (starting in 2007) he chairs the Committee for Freedom of Publication in the Union of Publishers. In February 2012 Zarakolu was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by members of the Swedish Parliament.

We have been informed that Ragıp Zarakolu  will not be able to attend his panel discussion because of a court case against him by Turkish authorities. This development is part of the on-going persecution against human rights activists in Turkey. The actions have been condemned by PEN, Index on Censorship, and Amnesty International.
