Summer Seminar 2013

With Prof. Paul Allain and Prof. Dariusz Kosiñski

16–20 September

For the third time the Grotowski Institute in Wroc³aw organized the Summer Seminars of its Open University of Research – the series of seminars, lectures and workshops in English that is aimed at all individuals from around the world interested in modern theatre and performance. This year we had planned an intensive week devoted to the meeting between West and East, between theory and practice, and between the art of theatre and the concept of performance as the phenomenon and the power ruling the social life.

The main line of this year’s Summer Seminars was constructed and led by Prof. Paul Allain (University of Kent, Canterbury), who proposed a series of lectures and workshops entitled “The Contemporary Performer: Practice meets Theory, East meets West”.

In addition to this, Prof. Dariusz Kosiñski (Jagiellonian University, Grotowski Institute) proposed the series of lectures on “The Performers of Poland”, devoted to the performative aspects and performative heroes of Polish culture from Mickiewicz to Grotowski. The participants were able to get not only the historical, practical and theoretical knowledge but most of all they were invited to question the borders we all used to treat as obvious.
