Joanna Wojnicka will give a talk on the impact of Vsevolod Meyerhold’s Biomechanics on film, particularly on film acting (Erast Garin’s and Igor Iliñski’s screen careers). The talk will include excerpts from Yakov Protazanov’s White Eagle (1928), based on Leonid Andreev’s The Governor, featuring Vsevolod Meyerhold as the Judge. Joanna Wojnicka is a film historian, critic, and Deputy Director of Education at the Institute of Audiovisual Arts of the Jagiellonian University, Kraków. Her main research interest is the history of European film. She explores the links between film and other arts, especially literature, painting, and theatre. She has authored many books. Tadeusz Szczepañski, ‘Meyerhold and Eisenstein: the master and the student’ Cinema Room Admission free This two-part historical drama about the life and rule of the Russian Tsar Ivan the Terrible (1530–1584) is considered Sergei Eisenstein’s life work. Part 1, which portrays a young ruler who wants to unite Russia, met with enthusiastic acclaim by critics and authorities, launching Sergei Eisenstein’s brilliant film career, while Part 2, which contained clear references to contemporary politics, led to his downfall. The film features the editing and dramaturgy that Eisenstein was famous for while the character of Ivan was supposedly modelled on the director’s former master, Vsevolod Meyerhold. Tadeusz Szczepañski is a film historian, critic, translator, and Professor at the University of Wroc³aw and PWSFTviT in £ód¼. He is an expert on Scandinavian and Russian cinema. He was an editor of Film na ¦wiecie [World’s Cinema] from 1988 to 1991 and its editor-in-chief from 1991 to 1994. He has authored numerous publications and won many awards including the Laterna Magica Award of the Chairman of the State Cinema Committee, the Boles³aw Micha³ek Kino Award, a Polish Academy of Sciences Award, and a Mayor of Gdañsk Award. After a failed attempt on his life and betrayal by a friend, the idealistic and well-meaning ruler turns into a mistrustful loner. |
