‘This publication presents a profile of this eminent actor and reformer of the Beijing opera. Meyerhold, Eisenstein and Brecht all wrote of the great significance of Mei Lanfang for the world’s theatre after the actor performed in Moscow in 1935. The book also contains an article by Zbigniew Osinski, presenting the Polish reception of Mei Lanfang’s work, a comparative text by Huang Zuolin, as well as two works by Nicola Savarese, an expert in the theatre of Eurasia and co-founder of ISTA. The volume begins with the memoirs of the artist, entitled My Life on Stage, which one may treat as a lecture on the art of an actor’. (Publisher’s note)
