Ryszard Cie¶lak is the teacher/instructor. The film has two 40-minute parts: the first focuses on plastiques, the second on corporals. An off-camera voice reads excerpts from Jerzy Grotowski’s Exercises. The documentary made at the Odin Teatret demonstrates how elements of training become elements of improvisation. The first presents exercises designed to develop voice awareness in the actor’s work at Odin Theatre as a theatre laboratory. The second focuses on physical actions. Both films show the inseparability of these two, as both voice work and body work – as tools for developing extra-daily techniques of acting expression – are seen as activities that have the same roots and energy grounding. Commentary on the exercises performed by Odin Teatret actors is provided by Eugenio Barba. Videotaped at a session of the International School of Theatre Anthropology (ISTA) in Bonn, 1980.  |
