The first part of the book Land of Ashes and Diamonds constitutes a fragment of the underground history of theatre, as well as a history of a certain love. I wrote it in order to give testimony to those couple of years that changed the theatre of the latter half of the 20th century; to the years when the artistic rebellion of Jerzy Grotowski, Ludwik Flaszen, Jerzy Gurawski and a tiny group of actors was born and cemented. The context is provided by the socialist reality of Poland, marked by the dullness set by the political regime, though at the same time, by intellectual and artistic fervour, in which a cry for liberty and an arduous “craftsman’s” striving for freedom were combined’.
