A ritual on laudesi Lauda (“praise”) is a common name used for several religious and artistic impulses developed in 13th-century Italy. There is a devotional kind of lauda, which is basically a prayer; a kind of lauda whose aim is poetic research; and dramatic lauda. A deep, long-term practice of these chants has made it clear that a lauda is cut across by various “blurred boundaries”. One of them runs between ritual (for singers) and performance (for listeners); between various forms of liturgy and drama. Chants, situated at the point where prayer, dramatic narration, poetry and music converge, were usually collected in laudari (“books of praises”). All the praises that we sing come from Laudario di Cortona, the oldest collection of liturgical monodies in the vulgar Italian. Some compositions included in Cortona are capable of bringing together all the different layers of: prayer, dramatic narration, poetry and music.
