Modal Singing Studio, led by Aram Kerovpyan, was established during the course of Teatr ZAR’s Armine, Sister project. The Studio’s work is based on Armenian liturgical chants which are learned by singing a drone and untempered intervals.

Between 2011 and 2013, a special training and vocal techniques were developed in collaboration between Aram Kerovpyan and Teatr ZAR members, which were then shared in VoicEncounters workshops. Currently we are seeking candidates interested in joining the Studio, who want to be initiated into the songs and to improve their modal singing skills.

The work has two aspects:
  • vocal work that allows participants to discover a natural voice involving the whole body
  • modal work that begins by discovering natural intervals that are no longer heard in contemporary urban environments. Participants will learn to consider a melody within the framework of a mode, i.e. a sound environment rather than a succession of notes or motifs. Thus, they will be encouraged to discover the diverse intervals, and then the modes they constitute on the basis of natural tetrachords. Chants with limited lyrics will be taught in this perspective.

Aram Kerovpyan (PhD in musicology) was born in Istanbul. As a youth, he received liturgical chant training in the Armenian Church. He learned to play the kanoun and studied the Middle Eastern music system with master musician Saadeddin Öktenay. In 1977 he moved to Paris where he devoted himself entirely to music, playing with various Middle Eastern musicians. In 1980 he joined the Ensemble de Musique Arménienne, which later became Kotchnak. From then on, Armenian music became his principle field of research, particularly the modal system of liturgical chant. In 1985 he formed Akn, an ensemble of Armenian liturgical chant. Parallel to his activities as a musician, Aram attends conferences, gives lectures in Europe and North America, and publishes on the theory of Armenian modal music. Since 1990 he has been master singer of the Armenian Cathedral in Paris. He is currently part of Teatr ZAR’s new project Armine, Sister.
