This first performance piece of the Chorea Theatre Association was created as a result of close cooperation between the Taniec Labiryntu group (Labyrinth Dances) and Orkiestra Antyczna (Ancient Orchestra). Mikołaj Szymański, PhD, provided philological aid, and his melorecited ancient texts have become a great pillar of support for our Chorea way of understanding the theatre. Theseus in the Labyrinth is a performance combining choreography, music and words: a group of dancers-singers and actors-musicians presents the myth of Theseus by means of choreography created on the basis of the ancient iconography (vases, reliefs, mosaics, artefacts found on Crete) and music inspired by music relics, ancient literature (Callimachus’ Hymn to Delos, Homeric Hymn to Demeter, Bacchylides’ dithyrambs) and the living tradition of the modern Balkan folk culture.

Songs of Euripides
Screening of a performance by Chorea Theatre
In Polish

Directed by Tomasz Rodowicz; music by Maciej Rychły; music interpretation and choir leader Tomasz Krzyżanowski; choreography by Chorea Theatre; lighting by Tomasz Krukowski; Visuals by Paweł Passini; costumes by Weselina Nikołow; premiere cast Dominika Krzyżanowska, Dorota Porowska, Katarzyna Tadeusz, Anna Bogdanowicz, Janusz Adam Biedrzycki, Hubert Domański, Paweł Korbus, Tomasz Krzyżanowski, Maciej Maciaszek, Tomasz Rodowicz, Arkadiusz Rogoziński; premiered on 1 September 2007, 56 minutes

When, together with the Earthfall group, we were finishing the Bakkus project, I knew that for Chorea it was not the end of work on Euripides and his Bacchae. Soon, we made a risky attempt to tell this ambiguous tragedy employing a totally different formula – using only the chorus parts from Bacchae and movement. The chorus is the protagonist of the drama. The performance Songs of Euripides is therefore a translation of the ancient choruses through gesture, dancing and singing into modern theatre. It seeks a new language of meanings in communication with the world: the language of the contemporary choreia. In this performance, gestures and movement are extreme, and the bacchae break the boundaries of gravity in their passion and elation. The text in ancient Greek clashes with the excellent translation by Jerzy Łanowski, and the contemporary music by Maciej Rychły is contrasted with the bacchae chord of antiquity.

Oratorium Dance Project is an international artistic and educational project addressed to young people (aged 13–35), children (aged 6–12) and mature adults (over 50 years of age) from Łódź and the Łódź region. Project participants included people from disadvantaged environments and those threatened with social exclusion.

The main aim of the project is integration of different social and age groups from multicultural Łódź and encouragement of artistic expression by children and young people from disadvantaged environments. These are usually young people from impoverished or dysfunctional families, orphanages, community centres and educational care facilities who have very limited access to art education. Participation in the project may be the first opportunity in their life to do something creative in art and work with professional artists.
