Tadeusz Kantor’s Mannequins is a personal documentary about the artist and theatre director Tadeusz Kantor. It includes short excerpts from archival recordings of Cricot 2 performances and photographs from the troupe’s rehearsals. It also shows Kantor working on his artistic objects, incorporating quotations that illustrate the essential ideas of the inventor of the Reality of the Lowest Rank concept.

Shot during rehearsals for I Will Never Return Here, the film premiered in April 1988 at Teatro Studio in Milan. Tadeusz Kantor counted it among the best films about his work. The Return explores the core ideas at the centre of Kantor’s art, giving voice to the artist’s writings, notes and interviews.

The film is based on a nearly 50-hour-long video recording of all the rehearsals for Tadeusz Kantor’s Cricot 2’s last performance piece Today Is My Birthday. The rehearsals were recorded by Cricoteka in Kraków between 13 October 1989 and 7 December 1990. Today Is My Birthday premiered after Tadeusz Kantor’s death (8 December 1990) in the Théâtre Garonne in Toulouse on 10 January 1991.
