Aikido is a traditional Japanese martial art with roots in Japanese swordsmanship and close combat (jujutsu). Its hallmarks are beautiful dance-like movements and close contact with the partner. Basic techniques include throws, locks and pins. Aikido training also involves the use of weapons such as sticks and knives. The goal is to bring the attacker under control by redirecting or neutralising their energy. Aikido is not competitive, training is an end in itself. It can be practised by everyone, regardless of age, sex, physical ability or health status. Aikido training is supported by meditation.

In this workshop we will seek to touch the essence of physical contact with the partner. In a safe setting we will look at how we react to attack and physical danger. Learning the basics of rolls, falls and other crucial techniques will be an important part of the training.

Please wear comfortable clothes (tracksuit bottoms and T-shirt).
