Chronology of life and work
Jerzy Grotowski (1933-1999)
1990 In the former premises of the Laboratory Theatre in Wroclaw, the Centre for Study of Jerzy Grotowski’s Work and for Cultural and Theatrical Research is founded, led initially by Osinski and Alina Obidniak, and later – until 2004 – by Osinski and Stanislaw Krotoski

1991 Grotowski receives a MacArthur Foundation grant, informally dubbed a ‘Genius Award’ (USA) and an honorary degree from Wroclaw University, promoted by Degler; presents the film Art as vehicle in Pisa (Italy); lectures in Turin (Italy)

1993 Specifies that the nature of his work with Richards has the character of ‘transmission’ – to transmit to Richards what he calls ‘the inner aspect of the work’; participates in the conference Jerzy Grotowski: the Theatrical Period at New York University and speaks at Fordham University (USA)

1994 Receives an honorary degree from The New School for Social Research, New York, and visits Odin Teatret (Denmark) for its 30th anniversary, where Richards shows the film Art as vehicle and gives a conference; Richards creates Action at the Workcenter, which is still being developed until the present day

1995 Grotowski speaks at Northwestern University in Evanston (USA), where he also presents the film Art as vehicle

1996 Changes the name of the Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski to the Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards, since, as he specified, ‘the practical work already concentrated itself in the hands of Richards’; speaks at Bennington College (USA) and at the session of the International School of Theatre Anthropology (ISTA) in Copenhagen (Denmark); the Workcenter accepts an invitation to São Paulo by Serviço Social do Comércio of Brazil to demonstrate Action and Grotowski, with Richards, conducts an international symposium on Art as vehicle; Grotowski receives the Polish Konrad Swinarski Award for directing

1997 Accepts the specially-created Chair in Theatre Anthropology at College de France, Paris, (his candidature is presented by Marc Fumaroli) and is granted the Great Award of the Polish Cultural Foundation; travels to Wroclaw with the Workcenter team, consisting of Richards, Biagini, Baruch Braner, Nhandan Chirco, Przemyslaw Wasilkowski and Brian Watt, at the invitation of the Grotowski Centre, where Action is demonstrated for the first time in Poland, and holds a conference with Richards; goes to Marseille (France) with the Workcenter, where Action is presented and he and Richards speak at a conference; Grotowski delivers seven of nine lectures in the cycle La ‘lignée organique’ au théâtre et dans le rituel (The ‘organic line’ in theatre and in ritual) at the College de France in Paris; goes to Bologna (Italy) where he receives an honorary degree from The University of Bologna (Italy) and where Action is presented as part of a Workcenter project

1998 Delivers the last two Collège de France lectures and receives the Golden Pegasus Award of the Tuscany region and the Beato Angelico Award; receives honorary citizenship of the city of Wroclaw

1999 14 January – dies in Pontedera (Italy)
