‘Vakhtangov’s performances have always caused resistance and surprise. However, they will continue to remain as ironic and insightful evidence that true art does not know any school, that it is romantic, futuristic and naturalistic, left-wing and right-wing, that it is never current but is always in relation to the present, that it is based on the foundations of working techniques and that it can flourish, with sincerity emanating from the stage’.
Pavel Antokolski: In Memory of the Teacher (1922)

‘Yevgeny Vakhtangov is usually mentioned as one of the principal reformers of the early 20th century. There is no doubt that he was one of the greatest artists of his age, but in contrast to Stanislavski and Meyerhold, Vakhtangov was not concerned with putting his experiences into words. He was focused on the studio and was convinced that the process of preparation of the performance should be intimate. Also, since the participants in this process are concrete people, it is impossible to create general rules for everyone. All of his pupils emphasised that his key strength was an ability to maintain a very deep, personal contact with every single actor’. (Fragment from the Introduction)
