This publication was funded by The Japan Foundation and The Takashima Foundation. ‘This book, exploring three examples of Noh plays, explains how the rules of perception in the ancient world can manifest in a work of art. According to those rules, all of nature, human surroundings, and the human being himself comprise the indivisible and living DIVINE BINOMIAL – one world in which those alive associate with the dead. Thanks to the invention of Ability (for this is the original meaning of the word Noh), the human being transforms the limitations of “here and now” into a continuation of eternity, in which eternity is not shapeless – rather, it is colorful and full of form’.
