“The Garden”
January–December 2010

ongoing educational project of Laboratorio  Permanente di Ricerca Sull’Arte dell’Attore

In collaboration with the GROTOWSKI INSTITUTE (Poland), CRUT (the Regional Centre of the University for Theatre, Turin, Italy), Krusce (Slovenia), Tetraktis percussions and IN-Chiostro Festival (Perugia, Italy), Scarlattine Teatro (Brianza, Italy) and University of Malta.
Directed by Domenico Castaldo in collaboration with the members of Lab. Perm.
For actors, students, and researchers in performing arts.

THE GARDEN - ongoing educational project -  A practical and theoretical path in self-discovery through the art of the actor.

How to master our own feelings, and through what instruments?
How can theatre go beyond entertainment and follow a path of the soul?
How to build a team of strong and capable individuals, working together according to principles of self-determination and cultural and religious rebellion?

We live in a Garden.

When I say We, I don’t speak about us in flesh and bones,
For the world we live in is not just the tangible one.
Maybe it will be more clear if I say that
The Garden grows and prospers in ourselves.
How can we take care of it?
What do we cultivate within?
Does it nourish us with its fruits and its beauty?
Does it flourish and grow or remain barren and sterile?
How much space, how much time, do we give to the care of our Garden?

The Garden in us shows its colours and scents in the graces of Art.
My garden grows, feeds, and cares for itself in the Art of the Actor.

D. Castaldo

The actor’s art is a synthesis of knowledge, expression and expressivity. Through this synthesis, the actor can go beyond self-exhibition to understand the mechanisms by which she lives, through which she communicates with herself and with others. The knowledge of the actor leads towards verticality (the sense of spirit) in life and towards the unconscious depths of the one who
does… until she makes of herself a “passer-by,” one who is between two parts of the living self: the interior world and the one through which we connect to others; the Garden and the World outside.

Over a period of thirteen years, the LABORATORIO PERMANENTE di RICERCA SULL’ ARTE DELL’ATTORE (Permanent Laboratory of Research on the Art of the Actor) has developed a system of techniques to survey and transmit the ways and passages
of acting. This work takes place through, inside, and beyond the development of the art of actor as living tradition (theatre of skill, theatre of craft), exploring the mechanisms of the actor and the human being in action.
