‘This book by Toporkov, who worked with Stanislavski from 1927 until 1938, the year of the great theatre reformer’s death, occupies a very important place in the bibliography relating to this history. Within, the author gives a detailed account of the course of the last works of Stanislavski: rehearsals for Katayev’s The Embezzlers, Gogol’s Dead Souls, and above all, for Moliere’s Tartuffe – an experimental, purely pedagogical work realised in the Operatic-Dramatic Studio, in which the famous system took on its final form in the method of physical actions, which Stanislavski himself considered his artistic testament… It was this method, presented in Toporkov’s book, which reverberated so strongly among neo-avant-garde artists of the latter half of the 20th century in Poland – above all, for Jerzy Grotowski’. (From the preface to the Polish edition by Leszek Kolankiewicz)
