Selection workshop for actors/singers
Andrey Tarkovsky artistic residencies of the Abbey of Pontigny (France) led by Fabrice Nicot and Marcel Pérès

Sun-Mon 16–17 March 2014, 10am1pm, 2pm7pm
Na Grobli Studio
The work will be conducted in English.

The aim of the workshop is to gather an international team (6 men and 6 women) for an Andrey Tarkovsky international artistic residency in the Abbey of Pontigny (France) from April until August 2014. The Abbey of Pontigny, the second daughter of Cîteaux and the biggest Cistercian church in Europe, is a well-known arts and music centre in France.

The selection workshop in Wroc³aw (16 hours, 8 hours a day) will be based on liturgical chants and organic stage actions involving text (Song of Songs and The Devils by Dostoyevsky). It will be led by Fabrice Nicot, director and artistic manager of Andrey Tarkovsky artistic residences and festival (Abbey of Pontigny, France), and his assistants from France; and Marcel Pérès, a French musicologist, composer, choral director and singer, the founder of Ensemble Organum, and authority on Gregorian and pre-Gregorian chant.

Workshop participants should be willing to join the team and participate in a series of work sessions from 6 April to 6 August 2014, culminating in July 2014 in the creation of a performance, which will be presented in Pontigny, as well as at the Avignon festival, in Paris and in Venice (San Giorgio Maggiore).

The performance Passage of Darkness to the Light, a result of 4 months of artistic residency, which will be created to mark 900 years of the Abbey of Pontigny, will explore organic ways to bring the actors – and by resonance, the spectators – from a dark to a bright state. Comprising two parts, it will be inspired by Dostoyevsky’s The Devils and the Cistercian Vigil of the Assumption, which includes the Song of Songs.

Presentation of the residency in France
Selected participants will work for 4 months with an international team led by Fabrice Nicot, including members of Epi d’Or Arts and, on an intervention basis, a number of leaders and directors (Leszek M±dzik, Sergei Kovalevich, Jean-François Favreau). The work will culminate in the creation of a preformance marking 900 years of the Abbey of Pontigny.

The project arose from the will of Andrey Tarkovsky, who, before his death, wished to create a centre dedicated to the arts and spirituality. In 2014, the Abbey of Pontigny, Epi d’Or Arts, the International Andrey Tarkovsky Institute and Andrey Andreievitch Tarkovsky (Andrey Tarkovsky’s son) will gather around a retrospective of the director’s films to propose an international programme of artistic residences and performances inspired by the world’s sacred arts (Europe, Russia, Latin America, Iran, India).

The Abbey will take care of all the expenses of the residency in France and the tour in Avignon, Paris and Venice from 6 April to 6 August 2014 (food, accommodation and travel), and will award each participant a grant.
